EAST CEMETERY, VERNON, CONNECTICUT

The towns of Vernon and Bolton separated from East Windsor in 1726. Vernon separated from North Bolton in 1760 but since there was no church at the new settlement Vernon settlers went over the notch to Bolton to attend church services until 1762. Returning from Bolton one day a boy fell from his wagon and died he was buried near the spot and became the first person to be buried in Vernon. The land around him became East Cemetery on Banforth Road. Vernon's first pastor, REV. EBENEZER KELLOGG was buried here in September 1817, age 81. He had served as Pastor for 55 years

When I recorded these gravestones in 1983 the cemetery was still completely secluded by woods. At the time there were remnants of broken stones along the edges of the cemetery. I decided to record what remained before more were lost. I later sorted them by surnames. With the exception of family plots, the burials were simply done in the order that their death occurred A space between the same surname denotes that they were not buried next to the name above them.
