In the early 1860, the Rev. Leonard Bacon, a prominent Congregationalist minister from New Haven, spent summer vacations in Colebrook. I suspect that he spent those weeks with a relative or, perhaps, a member of the Congregatinal clergy there. Have you run across any mention of the Bacons in your research? Would you have any idea how people traveled from New Haven to Colebrook in those days? Perhaps there was a railroad line? These questions I ask because I edit the letters and diary of Edward W. Bacon, a son who served in the navy and army during the Civil War.

I have been researching my family for about 11 years now. The surname is "Thibault" some spelled it Thebault. Thomas Thibault originally from Ste. Claire Quebec Canada, made his first home in the US in Colebrook CT. He married in Quebec, but his first two children were born in Colebrook. Doctor Louis Joseph Thibault a physician in Waterbury for almost 50 years was born in Colebrook as was his sister Delia (who later married Charles Hebert). I would appreciate you putting my name on the surname page. We are in the process of arranging a Thibault reunion in Waterbury in the fall of 2007, so all the exposure we can get will help. I am from Canada, Thomas was my great grandfathers brother. Their father Jean Baptiste had 15 children, all but 4 immigrated to Connecticut. Our history is very deep in the state and my cousins their are very proud of their history.

I have been trying to research any information on the Beech Hill School in Colebrook Ct. We recently purchased the School house and we are trying to bring it back to some original features. It was originally built in 1795 - burned in 1869 and rebuilt in 1890. It was moved twice, last time in 1950 and became a summer residence. So far we have not been able to find any pictures of the original school and thought it possible that you might send us in the right direction. We have seen the Rock School house that I believe was built at the same time. I would appreciate any information you may share. Thank you.

Clarissa SMITH was born November 8, 1821 in Colebrook, CT. Her parents were Antipas SMITH (b. March 31, 1792 in Millbury MA) and wife was Polly GOULD (b. January 25, 1795 in Millbury MA) they were married Nov. 20, 1816. I know they resided there until about 1813 and then moved to Colebrook where Clarissa was born. Does she have any other brothers or sisters born there in Colebrook? I only know of one brother (my gr gr-grandfather) Leander Towne SMITH born August 20, 1816 in Millbury MA. At some point the SMITH family move to Winsted, CT. Clarissa SMITH m. July 17, 1839 to Joel Grant GRISWOLD b March 15, 1813 in Colebrook. I would think that there were more siblings to Clarissa, however, any info on any family member would be great. I have no info on her mother except birth and marriage. Her father is buried in Forestview Cemetary in Winsted, CT. Thank you.
Also Leander was married 26 July 1843 to Adeline A Hull in Barkhamsted by a Rev William Frisbee. I have no record of her parents names or any history of her at all . Leander and Adeline divorced in 1866 and in 1877 Adeline sold property in Winstead and papers said she was then living in New Brunswick, New Jersey. She is a mystery to us. Any information would be a tremendous help. Thank you

I am researching a Bacon family in this area. I noticed
that on this query board a posting four years ago from Carolyn Vibrock who is
also trying to track down information on the same family that I am researching.
I am researching the Douglas Bacon family - who were in the 1800, 1830, 1840 and
1860 census. ( although in the 1860 census - Douglas had apparently died as the
census I am referencing is Allen Bacon ( son of Douglas ) and his mother
Cassandra is living with his
family. In 1836 - daughter Louisa ( who married Eliphalet Goodwill ) died and is
buried in Hemlock Cemetery there in Colebrook. I understand that her marriage
record lists Douglas Bacon as her father ( she was married 04 Nov 1833 ) - I
further understand the newspaper death notice listed - survived by her father
Douglas Bacon. Is there anyway that I can get this confirmed and get copies of
these two papers. If you can possible help me out with this, please email me
with costs involved. If you cannot help could you please steer me in the right
direction - thank you for your time and attention.

Looking for any information on family of Chileab/Chiliab and Nancy (Marshall) SMITH. I believe they lived in Colebrook perhaps 1790-1800 or so. They were in Tyringham, Becket, MA by 1810 and emigrated to OH in 1814.. There was a Chiliab Smith in the town of Litchfield census 1790 and in Colebrook 1800. They had children: Maria, Pearly, Warren, Florinda, David, Lucy/Lucia, Levira and Sylvester Marshall. David was born in Colebrook, the others may have been born in MA. Warren, David, Lucy, Sylvester went to OH with parents. Levira died as infant. I believe Nancy MARSHALL SMITH was daughter of Abner, Sr and Hannah MARSHALL of Torrington, CT.. Her Aunt (?) , Asenath Marshall, married another Chileab SMITH of Goshen. I believe these two Chileabs were cousins. Any information would be appreciated!

I am seeking information on Captain Epaphroditus Bligh, buried in Wampsville, New York. I have been told that he appears in the 1790 Census of Colebrook, Litchfield, CT as Paphroe Blye, though I did not find such an entry via the various internet sites that I reviewed, including military and pensions. Epaphroditus Bligh's tombstone states that he was born in 1766, died 10 May 1849 His wife, Sara (Family name unknown) was born in 1767 and died in 1837. Any suggestions you may have as to where I might find confirmation of my ancestor's birth and birthplace would be most welcome. Many thanks.

I am researching the wife of Benoni Webb, Elizabeth Phillips of Colebrook. I believe she may have been a daughter of Samuel Phillips and sister of Samuel Phillips, Jr. I can't find any info on her in the Barbour except for her marriage to Benoni Webb. I believe Samuel Jr may have moved with Benoni and Eliza out to Otis, Mass, then on to WNY, and finally to Geneva, OHIO where they died. If anyone has additional info on this Phillips family in CT, please let me know.

I have copies of three letters that were written to my great-grandfather, Joseph Bacon, by his sister, Louisa R. Goodwill in 1834, his brother Earl Bacon in 1838, and one written to him by his mother, Cassandra Bacon, with a note from Earl written in 1843. The letters were all written in Colebrook, CT. Louisa (Bacon) Goodwill, who married Eliphalet Goodwill, died in 1836 at the age of 21 and is buried in Hemlock Cemetery, Colebrook, CT. I have been told that Joseph's father was Douglass Bacon but have no proof of this (his name is not listed in any of the letters). Douglass Bacon was born in Farmington, CT. in 1767 but I can't find when or where he might have married Cassandra ?? or very much about his children. The 1850 census has Cassandra, age 78, living with son Allen Bacon in Winchester, CT. Do you have any information about this Bacon family in Colebrook? I would appreciate any suggestions you might have. I have just about exhausted all the leads I have found.

I am looking for any information regarding the family lines of SPENCER and/or WHITFORD that settled in the Colebrook area ca. early 1800's. From what I can determine, John Spencer and Mary Whitford were married about 1805 (probably around the Greenwich, RI area). I could not find a census record of John prior to 1820 in the Colebrook area, but Mary begins to appear in the census of 1820.
I have found some information that Mary's son, John Spencer, married Emeline Hill in the Colebrook area in 1829. Apparently, the marriage was performed by Mary's brother, Samuel Whitford. John and Emeline are buried in the Eno Hill cemetery (aka Spencer cemetery), along with a couple of the Whitfords.
Any information that anyone may have would be appreciated. For example, where did this family live and what did they do? Who were the parents of Emeline Hill? Who was the wife of Samuel Whitford (shown as Tabitha, wife of Samuel, buried in one of the Colebrook cemeteries)?

Mary (Polly) BELDEN born abt 1780? of Colebrook married Allen SEYMOUR about1800 and they lived in Sandisfield MA. They had two children Allen Jr, and Seth Seymour (married Emeline Palmer). Her mother was also Mary and I think her father was James (that's what her death cert said). I've been unable to connect her or James to the rest of the Belden family in the area. Anyone have any helpful info? I have the Seymours & Palmers back to the original immigrant and would like to do the same with the Beldens.

Calvin SAGE (s/o Solomon & Lois (WILCOX) SAGE of Berlin, Middlesex Co., CT, was living in Colebrook in 1820-2 with his wife Jerusha (PORTER-?) and at least five children: Lucy (1788), Linus (1789), Luther (1794), Martin Luther (1796) and Aaron (1798). The family is also briefly mentioned in the History of Torrington. By 1829 the widow and her family had migrated to Lorain Co., OH, to join her two brothers-in-law, Joseph and Isaac SAGE and their families. I would like to know where Calvin died or is buried, to confirm that his wife's maiden name was PORTER and when and where they were married. Any help would be most appreciated.
