D., Centralia [a defunct community; was on the west bank the Wisconsin River; in 1900 combined with Grand Rapids, Wisconsin, on east bank of Wisconsin River, and become Wisconsin Rapids, Wood County, Wisconsin], was born in Cumberland County, Maine, 12 April 1833. He was educated in Portland [Cumberland County, Maine], and graduated at Maine Medical School in 1854. Dr. WHITNEY practiced at the Marine Hospital, Boston [Suffolk County, Massachusetts], previous to coming to Grand Rapids [defunct community; combined in 1900 with Centralia to form Wisconsin Rapids, Wood County, Wisconsin] in 1855 [Wood County created during the preceding year from Portage]. He was the first physician who settled here. On 20 June 1857 Dr. George W. WHITNEY was married to [his first wife] Miss Elizabeth ANSON, of Portland [Cumberland County], Maine. She [Elizabeth (ANSON) WHITNEY] died on 24 July 1863, leaving one child, Willis, who was born 23 July 1863. In July 1865 Dr. George W. WHITNEY was married to [his second wife] Miss Emily HANSON.
