WI BIO - Wood Co - SCHMIDT, Ernst G. History of Northern Wisconsin. Chicago: Western Historical, 1881, v 2, p 1212 Ernst G. SCHMIDT, dealer in general merchandise [Marshfield, Marshfield Township, Wood County, Wisconsin] was born 18 May 1835 in Saxony [birthdate agrees with his age in the 1870 Census of White River Township, Muskegon Township, Muskegon County, Michigan]. He came to the United States in 1860. He came to Port Huron [St. Clair County], Michigan, thence to Milwaukee [Milwaukee County, Wisconsin], remained there ten years, and then went to White River [White River Township in Muskegon County], Michigan. In the spring of 1880 Mr. SCHMIDT came to Marshfield [Wood County, Wisconsin, which in 1878 was on the Wisconsin Central Railway line.] In 1867 he [Ernst G. SCHMIDT] was married to Miss Catherine DORNHARDT [who is age twenty-nine in the 1870 Census of White River Township, Muskegon Township, Muskegon County, Michigan, thus born about 1841], of Milwaukee. He has [Ernst G. and Catherine (DORNHARDT) SCHMIDT have?] six children [five of whom are listed in the 1870 census]: (1) Henry [age eighteen in the 1870 Census, thus born about 1852], (2) Rosa [age eleven in the census, thus born about 1859], (3) Katie [Cathrine, age nine in the census, thus born about 1861], (4) Joseph [age four in the census, thus born about 1866], (5) Ernestine [age one in the census, thus born about 1869], and (6) Ernest [who does not appear in the 1870 census, enumerated 19 August 1870, thus likely born after that date]. Mr. SCHMIDT has been engaged most of the time in mercantile business. He kept an hotel part of the time while in Michigan. [The 1870 census entries data for this SCHMIDT family includes only one other person, whose surname is illegible: a male, L. F. ----FELT?, age 41, laborer, $30, $300, born in Canada, by calculation about 1829.] Submitted by Cathy Kubly
