WI BIO - Winnebago Co - WHITTAKER, George History of Northern Wisconsin. Chicago: Western Historical, 1881, vol II, p 1166 George WHITTAKER, of the firm of C. Heim & Company, marble dealers, was born in Scotland on 08 September 1843, and emigrated to America in 1848, with his parents, and settled in Paterson [Passaic County], New Jersey, where they lived one year. Then moved to Milwaukee [Milwaukee County], Wisconsin, and lived there until 1862, and there George learned a portion of his trade. George WHITTAKER enlisted in Company F, 24th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry, and served during the [Civil] War, and was engaged in the battles of Perrysville, Stone River, Chickamauga, Mission Ridge, Resaca, Peach Tree Creek, Atlanta, Jonesboro, Franklin, Nashville, Dallas, Kenesaw Mountain and all the principal battles in that vicinity. He was mustered out at Nashville, Tennessee in June 1865. George WHITTAKER then returned to Milwaukee and engaged in marble cutting one year, then went to Chicago, Illinois, and followed his trade until 1870, and then worked at his trade for three months in New York City. George WHITTAKER then went to Boston [Suffolk County], Massachusetts, and worked at his trade for five years, and then returned to Milwaukee and worked at his trade for three years. He then kept a summer resort until 13 October 1880, when he moved to Oshkosh [Winnebago County], Wisconsin, and engaged in the marble business. In May 1875 George WHITTAKER was married in Chicago [Cook County], Illinois, to Miss Eliza DAILY, who was born in Milwaukee [Milwaukee County], Wisconsin. George and Eliza (DAILY) WHITTAKER have three children: Dorrit, Nellie, and Charles. Submitted by Cathy Kubly
