Chicago: Western Historical, 1881, v II, p 1163 Joseph SCHNEIDER, proprietor of the Phoenix House, Main Street [Oshkosh, Winnebago County, Wisconsin], was born 03 July 1840 in Prussia. He emigrated to America with his parents in 1852, and settled in Albany [Albany County], New York, where they lived about fourteen months; then moved to Toledo [Lucas County], Ohio, in 1854, lived there about two years, then moved to Oshkosh, Wisconsin. Joseph SCHNEIDER worked at lumbering in winters, and in summers worked in saw mills for ten years. He began hotel keeping in 1874, and has since continued that business. In October 1865 in Oshkosh [Winnebago County], Wisconsin, he [Joseph SCHNEIDER] was married to Miss Tracy HESS, who was born in Bavaria, Germany.
