WI BIO - Winnebago Co - SCHMIDT, Peter History of Northern Wisconsin. Chicago: Western Historical, 1881, v II, p 1163 Peter SCHMIDT, of the firm of Schmidt Brothers, was born 16 January 1842 in Prussia. He emigrated to America in June 1854, and located in Washington County, Wisconsin, where until 1861 he engaged in farming. On 27 April 1861 Mr. SCHMIDT enlisted in Company D, Sixth Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry, and after the battle of Antietam was transferred to Battery B, Fourth Artillery. He was also engaged in the battles of Chancellorsville, Fredericksburg, Mine Run, Bull Run, Gettysburg, Atlanta, Macon, and Savannah, served until 27 June 1865, and was mustered out at Madison, Dane County, Wisconsin. Peter SCHMIDT kept an hotel in Racine [Racine County, Wisconsin] until 1866. Then he, with his brother Henry SCHMIDT, engaged in the above business at Racine, until October 1868, and then moved to Oshkosh [Winnebago County, Wisconsin]. Schmidt Brothers, 211 and 213 Main Street [Oshkosh], manufacturers of trunks, valises, traveling bags, etc., established in 1868, employs seventy-three men annually, and does about $90,000 in business annually. They used 800,000 feet of lumber in 1880. In 1870 in Oshkosh [Winnebago County, Wisconsin] he [Peter SCHMIDT] was married to Miss Catharine GORES, who was born in Prussia. Submitted by Cathy Kubly
