SAFFORD, miller in the Waukau Flouring Mills, Waukau [Rushford Township, Winnebago County, Wisconsin], was born 03 December 1848 in Vermont. His parents moved to Poygan [Poygan Township, adjacent to and north of Rushford Township], Winnebago County, Wisconsin, in 1851. He began life on his own hook at the age of twelve years, and worked on a farm the first year. In November 1862 he [David W. SAFFORD] enlisted in Company D, 32nd Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry, served until August 1865, the close of the Civil War, and was mustered out in August 1865 at Madison [Dane County], Wisconsin. He returned to his home in Poygan [Winnebago County] and worked on a farm until 1867. He then went to Waukau [Rushford Township, Winnebago County], Wisconsin, and began work in the Empire Mills; was there one year; then changed into Waukau Mills, and has since been there. In February 1871 in Waukau [Winnebago County, Wisconsin] he [David W. SAFFORD] was married to Miss Jane LOWE, who was born in the village of Waukau [on Section 36, Winnebago County, Wisconsin]. They [David W. and Jane (LOWE) SAFFORD] had three daughters: (1) Ernestine S., the youngest; (2) Oliva M ., deceased; and (3) Maud E., deceased. Mr. SAFFORD is a member of the Masonic Lodge of Omro [in Omro Township, adjacent to and east of Rushford Township, Winnebago County], Wisconsin. Submitted by Cathy Kubly
