WI BIO - Winnebago Co - ROBERTS, John History of Northern Wisconsin. Chicago: Western Historical, 1881, vol II, p 1177 John ROBERTS, proprietor of Roberts' Summer Resort, Doty Island [Winnebago County, Wisconsin; on Lake Winnebago, near Neenah], was born in 1833 in Oneida County, New York. He kept an hotel in Schenectady [Schenectady County, New York] and other places, and about 1858 went to New York City, where he remained until 1862. He was then in Newark [Licking County], Ohio, about five years. John ROBERTS came to Wisconsin in 1866, and located in Columbus, Columbia County, and opened an hotel, and from there moved to Menasha [Winnebago County, Wisconsin]. Mr. ROBERTS has been engaged in the hotel business as clerk and proprietor for about thirty-four years. His present business has been open five years, having accommodations for about one hundred people. Mr. ROBERTS is now building a number of cottages, which will be ready for the season of 1882. In 1861 in Fonda, Montgomery County, New York, he [John ROBERTS] was married to Miss Martha LINGENFELTER, of Fonda. They [John and Martha (LINGENFELTER) ROBERTS] have three children: John, George C., and Stella. Mr. ROBERTS is a member of the Ancient Free & Accepted Masons, the Independent Order of Odd Fellows Lodge and Encampment, and the Royal Arcanum.
