WI BIO - Winnebago Co - ROBERTS, Griffith History of Northern Wisconsin. Chicago: Western Historical, 1881, vol II, p 1162 Griffith ROBERTS, filer, Morgan Brothers, was born in 1841 in Wales, and came to the United States with his parents in 1842. They settled in Ohio, where they died. Griffith was adopted by D. BOWEN and wife, and came with them to Waukesha [Waukesha County], Wisconsin, about 1851. Griffith ROBERTS came to Oshkosh about 1861, and for a time was in the bakery business. In 1872 he engaged in the lumber business with the firm C. L. Chapman & Company. They ran a saw mill up to 1874, when the mill was burned out, and the firm then dissolved. Mr. ROBERTS has been with the present firm since that time, the first seven or eight years engaged in sawing. In November 1864 in Oshkosh [Winnebago County, Wisconsin] Mr. [Griffith] ROBERTS was married to Miss Jane M. DAVIS, of Winnebago County [Wisconsin], formerly of Cattaraugus County, New York. She [Jane M. (DAVIS) ROBERTS] died in 1876, leaving two children: Arthur Eieu, and John Wallace. Mr. Griffith ROBERTS is a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. [According to the naming custom practiced in some parts of Wales, the father of Griffith ROBERTS would have had Robert as a first name. By this Welch naming practice, a son took his father's first, not last, name as a surname. Unknown to submitter if this naming custom was practiced by this family in Wales.] Submitted by Cathy Kubly
