Chicago: Western Historical, 1881, vol II, pp 1185-1186 Richard REED, Jr., dealer in a general line of groceries, provisions, crockery, etc., was born 12 September 1841 in Pottsdam, St. Lawrence County, New York. His father, Richard REED, Sr., settled at Omro [Omro Township, Winnebago County, Territory of] Wisconsin, in October 1847 [the State of Wisconsin created 29 May 1848], and has since lived there, engaged in farming until 1873. Mr. [Richard] REED, Jr., lived at home until he was eighteen years of age, at which time he went to Pike's Peak, Colorado, and was there two years, mining. He then returned to Fond du Lac [in Fond du Lac Township, Fond du Lac County], Wisconsin, and was engaged there in the hardware business, under the firm name of Edwards & Reed, where he continued one year. Richard REED Jr. enlisted in Company C, 14th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry, and was mustered in at Madison [Dane County, Wisconsin], in the latter part of February 1864, and engaged in the Atlanta campaign, under General SHERMAN. He was soon transferred from the 17th to the 16th Army Corps, and engaged in the battles of Franklin, Nashville, [p 1186] and the siege of Spanish Fort, opposite Mobile. He was mustered out at Mobile [Mobile County, Alabama] on 09 October 1865. Richard REED, Jr. returned to Omro [Winnebago County, Wisconsin], bought a farm, followed farming until 1873, and then moved into the village [of Omro] and formed the company of Davis & Reed, continued two years, then sold his interest to his partner. Mr. REED then engaged in business on his own account. His present business was established in April 1876, the trade amounting to $13,000 to $15,000 per annum, and he employs two clerks. In February 1863 at Fond du Lac, Fond du Lac County, Wisconsin, Richard REED Jr. was married to Miss Maggie EDWARDS, who was born in Scotland. They [Richard and Maggie (EDWARDS) REED, Jr.] have three children: Frank R., Howard E., and Grace M.
