McMASTER, of Woodstock [Windsor County, Vermont], was born 28 November 1833, in Ireland, son of John and Nancy (BURKE) McMASTER, and emigrated with his parents to Vermont when a child. His education was obtained in the public schools, and from the experience derived as an apprentice served in a printing office, Mr. McMASTER has followed the vocation of printer, editor, and publisher. From 01 January 1861 he has been the proprietor and publisher of the "Spirit of the Age." He is now the oldest journalist as regards continuous service in the state. Democratic in his political faith, he has served on state, county, and town committees, was postmaster of Woodstock during President CLEVELAND's first administration, holding the office for four years and ten months, and several times has been the candidate of his party for town representative. During the period of the Rebellion of the slave states his paper heartily endorsed and supported all measures leading to a vigorous prosecution of the war. On 10 July 1867 Mr. [William D.] McMASTER was married to Maria E., daughter of Wilder and Eliza C. (DEMARY) RAYMOND.
