Burlington: Ullery Publishing Company, 1912, p 232 Augustus Pingry HUNTON, lawyer, Bethel [Windsor County, Vermont], was born 23 February 1816 at Groton [Grafton County], New Hampshire, and died 20 June 1911; son of Dr. Ariel and Polly (PINGRY) HUNTON. Was educated in the public schools at Hyde Park [Lamoille County, Vermont]. Studied law with Hon. Joshua SAWYER, Hyde Park, Hon. William C. WILSON, Bakersfield [Franklin County, Vermont], and Hon. William M. PINGRY, Waitsfield [Washington County, Vermont]. Admitted to the Vermont bar in 1837; began the practice of law at Stockbridge Common [Windsor County, Vermont]. In 1838 he removed to Bethel, and entered into partnership with Hon. Julius CONVERSE. Had as partners at different times Hon. Perley C. JONES, Allen P. DUDLEY, Romanzo WALKER, Dudley C. BLODGETT, Daniel F. WEYMOUTH, Moulton J. GILMAN, and Hon. William B. C. STICKNEY. Was a Republican; was representative from the town of Bethel six times in the House of Representatives, twice senator from Windsor County, speaker of the House in 1860 and 1861, and presided over that body at the extra session of April 1861, summoned to provide for national defense. During the Civil War was superintendent of recruiting for Windsor County. In 1864 was a delegate to the Republican national convention which nominated Abraham Lincoln. In 1849 Mr. [Augustus Pingry] HUNTON married [Miss?] Caroline PAIGE of Bethel; they had two children: Mary and Albert (deceased). Submitted by Cathy Kubly
