Burlington: Ullery Publishing Company, 1912, p 191 Ralph Edward FLANDERS, mechanical engineer, Springfield [Windsor County, Vermont], was born 28 September 1880 at Barnet [Caledonia County, Vermont], son of Albert Wellington and Mary (GILFILLAN) FLANDERS. Educated in the public schools, Lincoln [Kent County], Rhode Island; Pawtucket and Central Falls high schools [both in Providence County], Rhode Island, and engineering education by night study. Apprenticed to the machinist's trade at the Brown-Sharpe Manufacturing Company, Providence, in 1897; worked as draftsman and designer with various firms in New England until July 1905, when he went to New York on the editorial staff of "Machinery," remaining until 1910, when he entered the employ of the Fellows Gear Shaper Company, Springfield, as mechanical engineer, which position he still holds. Has made a special study of gearing, having written a book, "Gear Cutting Machinery," besides smaller pamphlets, and various papers on the subject read before the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and other bodies, as well as lectures at various schools and colleges. Independent in politics. Congregationalist. Associate member of American Society of Mechanical Engineers; member of Society of Automobile Engineers, and Machinery Club of New York.
