Brattleboro: Transcript Publishing Company, 1894, pp 345-346 (portrait p 346) Chandler Miller RUSSELL, of Wilmington [Vermont], was born 07 December 1842 in Wilmington [Windham County, Vermont], son of Jordan H. and Harriet L. (PARTRIDGE) RUSSELL. He received his early education in the public schools and fitted for college at Wesleyan Academy, graduating in 1865. In 1862, while pursuing his academic course, he returned to his native state and enlisted in Company F, Sixteenth Vermont Volunteers, and participated with this regiment in the battle of Gettysburg, being mustered out of service 10 August 1863. Subsequently he creditably filled the position of principal of the Wilmington high school, and in 1867 engaged in mercantile business in that town [Wilmington, Vermont], which pursuit he followed until 1878. Three years later Mr. RUSSELL again resumed the profession of teaching, and in 1882 entered the National College of Elocution and Oratory at Philadelphia [Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania], graduating in 1884. In connection with Mrs. RUSSELL he then traveled through New England and New York, giving public readings, which were received with marked favor. For the last six years Mr. RUSSELL has traveled extensively, lecturing upon popular subjects, in which enterprise he has been unusually successful. Mr. [Chandler Miller] RUSSELL is one of the incorporators of the Mount Vernon Institute of Elocution and Languages of Philadelphia, and at present holds the position of director. He has held many important local offices, always discharging faithfully and conscientiously the trusts reposed in him. In 1891 was elected a councilor of the American Institute of Civics, New York City. He is a frequent contributor to the columns of various newspapers and periodicals, and is now collecting material for a history of the Sixteenth Vermont Regiment, and with the aid of an excellent private library and his own personal endeavor, keeps well informed with regard to all matters of current interest. For nearly thirty years Mr. RUSSELL has been a Free Mason, holding various honorable positions in the order, and he is prominent in the Grand Army of the Republic. He is the manager of an extensive insurance business, but still devotes some time to filling engagements on the platform. In June 1877 he [Chandler Miller RUSSELL] married Gertrude E., daughter of Lorenzo and Beulah (BLANCHARD) BOWEN, of Readsboro [Bennington County, Vermont].
