Brattleboro: Transcript Publishing Company, 1894, p 255 Hosea MANN, Jr., of Wilmington [Vermont], was born 13 July 1858 in Wilmington [Windsor County, Vermont], son of Hosea and Maria (GROUSBECK) MANN. Received his early education at the common schools of his native town; Brattletboro Academy [Windham County, Vermont]; and Eastman's Business College, Poughkeepsie [Dutchess County], New York. After leaving school he commenced the study of the theory and practice of law with the Hon. O. E. BUTTERFIELD, was admitted to the Windham County bar in 1882, and at once began the practice of his profession at Wilmington. In 1879, as soon as Mr. MANN had reached his majority, he was elected treasurer of the Wilmington Savings bank and town clerk of the Town of Wilmington, both of which positions he held until 1885, when he resigned to devote his time to other matters. In 1886 was elected state's attorney for Windham County, and served in that capacity for a full term of two years; elected to the General Assembly for the successive terms, 1886, 1888, and 1890, and served with great credit, giving valuable assistance in putting through many important measures. In 1890 his ability as a legislator was recognized, and he was elected speaker of the House, being one of the youngest men who ever received that honor. Mr. MANN is interested in many financial and industrial enterprises, and has given a great deal of time and money to the development of his own town and state as a place of summer resort. In February 1880 he [Hosea MANN, Jr.] married Eva A., daughter of Rev. Jeremiah and Jane GIFFORD of Wilmington [Windsor County, Vermont]. Of this union is one son, Ralph Hosea.
