HOLDEN, lumber dealer and manufacturer, Brattleboro [Windham County, Vermont], was born 02 May 1860 at Jamaica [Windham County, Vermont], son of Justus Culwell and Philena Satira (RICE) HOLDEN. Educated at the village schools. From 1878 to 1881 he was in the lumber and grain business, and was engaged in farming from 1881 to 1884. In 1884 he lost everything to fire, but started in the lumber business at Wardsboro [Windham County] the same year, entirely on borrowed capital. In 1891 he formed a partnership with Judge J. L. MARTIN of Brattleboro, and has since been actively engaged in the lumber business in Brattleboro, the firm owning and leasing the factories of the Hooker, Corser & Mitchell Company and C. H. Eddy Bottling Works, and handling large contracts of timber land in southern Vermont. Republican. Congregationalist. Member of Brattleboro Lodge No. 102, Free & Accepted Masons; Fort Dummer Chapter No. 12, Royal Arch Masons; Quonektacat Tribe No. 1, Independent Order of Red Men; and the Vermont Wheel Club. In 1881 he [Lyman E. HOLDEN] married [Miss?] Ella M. KIDDER of Wardsboro [Windham County, Vermont], who died in 1891; they had two children: Alice Ella and Henry Lyman. In 1893 Mr. HOLDEN married Grace Emma HILDRETH of Brattleboro [Windham County, Vermont]; they have one daughter, Gladys Evelyn. Submitted by Cathy Kubly
