DOWLEY, was born 16 August 1843 in Wardsboro [Windham County, Vermont], son of Darius L. and Austis (BALDWIN) DOWLEY. His parents removed to Brattleboro [Windham County] when he was of early age, and he received his education in the public schools there, graduating from the high school, after which he studied for two years under a former principal of the West Brattleboro Academy. Upon the close of his studies he entered the local office of the Vermont & Massachusetts Railroad Company, where he remained for several months, when the position of teller in the old Bank of Brattleboro, now the Vermont State Bank, was offered him, which he accepted; four years afterwards became cashier, and continued as such until his election in 1889 as president; in addition to his official duties in the Vermont National Bank, he has enjoyed many positions of trust in his town and county, the duties of which he has always met with characteristic ability and sterling honesty; has served many years as treasurer of his town and the village school district; is also county treasurer; director in the Vermont Valley Railroad Company, and various other organizations; has several times been prominently mentioned as the Republican candidate for State Treasurer of Vermont. On 17 May 1870 he [George S. DOWLEY] married Miss Ada E., daughter of William H. and Adeline S. (THAYER) ESTABROOK, of Brattleboro [Windham County, Vermont]. Submitted by Cathy Kubly
