Windham DAVIS, Frank E. Men of Vermont: Illustrated Biographical History of Vermonters & Sons of Vermont. Ullery. Brattleboro: Transcript Publishing Company, 1894, pp 97-98 Frank E. DAVIS, of Davis Bridge [Windham County, Vermont], was born 22 May 1847 in Whitingham [Windham County, Vermont], son of Freeborn G. and Sara (BROWN) DAVIS. His family were among the earliest settlers of the town. His progenitors for three generations have successively lived on the farm where Mr. DAVIS now resides. His education commenced at the Leland and Gray Seminary, Townshend [Windham County, Vermont], but later he studied at Arms Academy, Shellburne Falls [Franklin County], Massachusetts [Shelburne Falls, Chittenden County, Vermont?], and was graduated from Burnham's Business College, Springfield [Hampden County], Massachusetts. After his graduation Mr. DAVIS was first employed as a traveling agent, but in 1868 he engaged his services as a clerk at Readsboro [Bennington County, Vermont], and later became a member of the firm of Stearns & Davis. After a connection of three years with this concern, he moved to Turners Falls, at which place he engaged in business for a year. He then returned to Whitingham, and though possessing a farm, he has worked much of the time for E. J. Bullock & Company of Readsboro as salesman. In 1887, on account of the failing health of his parents, he moved to the homestead where he now resides. During the summer season Mr. DAVIS is the manager of the Spring Hotel at Sadawga [Windham County, Vermont], and is now the station agent at Whitingham for the H. T. & W. Railroad. [Whitingham, Vermont, was originally known as Sadawga Springs.] On 21 August 1873 in Whitingham [Windham County, Vermont], he [Frank E. DAVIS] was married to Ida M., daughter of J. and Olive (SWEET) BULLARD; they have three children: F. Rockwell, Sara, and F. Elliot. In politics Mr. DAVIS has been a Republican; was the nominee for that party for representative in 1870; has been chairman of the board of selectmen for two years, receiving the unanimous vote of his townsmen; has discharged the duties of a lister for many terms; and in 1892 was made a justice of the peace. He affiliates with Deerfield Valley Lodge, Independent Order of Odd Fellows, at Readsboro, and is the V. G. of the same; and is a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church at Wilmington [Windham County, Vermont]. Submitted by Cathy Kubly
