CLAY, insurance, Brattleboro [Windham County, Vermont], was born 04 August 1869 at North Thetford [Orange County, Vermont], son of Benjamin M. and Ellen (HEATH) CLAY. Graduated Brattleboro High School 1888. Commenced business with F. K. BARROWS, dry goods, 1886; entered employ of Pratt, Wright & Company, clothiers, upon graduation from high school; with Cumner, Jones & Company, wholesale tailors' trimmings, Boston, October 1889; at the death of his father, went to Brattleboro, with Emerson, & Son, March 1901; entered office Estey Organ Company, Boston [Suffolk County, Massachusetts], 01 January 1903; traveling salesman for that concern two years later; 01 January 1909, entered office of H. E. Taylor & Son, Brattleboro, as special agent National Life Insurance Company; bought insurance business from estate of C. F. R. JENNE, 06 June 1905. Republican. Congregationalist; deacon of Center Church, Brattleboro, since 01 January 1906. Member of all Brattleboro Masonic bodies, and Lodge of Perfection at Windsor; past master of Brattleboro Lodge No. 102, Free & Accepted Masons; generalissimo of Beauseant Commandery No. 7, Knights of Pythias; member Wantastiquet Lodge No. 5, Independent Order of Odd Fellows.
