Burlington: Ullery, 1912, Part II, p 98 Charles Edwin ALLEN, florist and seedman, Brattleboro [Windham County, Vermont], was born 02 February 1851, in Westminster Township, Windham County, Vermont, son of George Green and Almira (CARPENTER) ALLEN. He was educated at Brattleboro High School. Mr. ALLEN began business in 1868 as a market gardener, building his first greenhouses in 1872, and increasing to about 12,000 feet of glass from 1875-1880. He cultivated strawberries extensively, and did a large catalogue trade, later supplying the wholesale and retail trade in cut flowers and plants. Since 1906 he has been a successful contractor, builder, and manufacturer of cement blocks. In 1872 Charles Edwin ALLEN married Emma Maria HODGE of Groton [Middlesex County], Massachusetts. They have four children: (1) Florence Cragin; (2) Carroll Everett; (3) Ralph George; and (4) Louis Isaiah. Mr. ALLEN is a Republican and a Congregationalist. Submitted by Cathy Kubly
