ALEXANDER, of Saxtons River [Windham County, Vermont], was born 21 February 1838 in Chesterfield [Cheshire County], New Hampshire, son of Willard H. and Eunice (SCOTT) ALEXANDER. After passing the common schools of his native town, he entered the high school at Brattleboro [Windham County, Vermont]. In 1853, as an apprentice, he entered the employ of Gates & White, cabinet makers, Brattleboro, and remained with the firm three years. Removing to Bellows Falls [Windham County, Vermont] in 1856, he served in he dry goods store of Gray & Perry. Finding the business congenial, he bought Mr. PERRY's interest in it, conducted successfully his department, and at the end of two years sold his share in the store to engage with S. Perry & Company in the manufacture of woolen goods at Cambridgeport [Windham County, Vermont], residing at Saxtons River. Mr. FARNSWORTH lately selling his interest, the firm is now known as Alexander, Smith & Company. Politically Mr. ALEXANDER is a Republican, and in 1886 he represented the town of Rockingham [Windham County] in the [Vermont] Legislature. Mr. ALEXANDER is a prominent and widely known member of the order of Free & Accepted Masons, a member of King Solomon Lodge and Abenaqui Royal Arch Chapter, Bellows Falls, and of the council and encampment at Windsor. Mr. [John F.] ALEXANDER was married 31 October 1860 to Mary S., daughter of George and Hannah (CHANDLER) PERRY, of Saxtons River.
