WI BIO - Waupaca Co - WOODS, William History of Northern Wisconsin. Chicago: Western Historical, 1881, vol II, pp 1099-1100 William WOODS, merchant, Weyauwega [Weyauwega Township, Waupaca County, Wisconsin], was born on 19 April 1845 in Gosberton, Lincolnshire, England, a son of William and Sarah (NOBLES) WOODS. The family came to the United States in 1849, and resided near Rochester [Monroe County], New York. The father [William WOODS] died in Monroe County, New York, and in 1855 the mother and young [William] WOODS came to Weyauwega. William WOODS attended school in Weyauwega until he was fourteen, then hired out as chore boy for Bates & Puffer. He [p 1100] afterward worked in the store of L. L. POST at $1 per week, boarding himself. From 1864 until 1867 he was clerk for H. C. MUMBRUE. He then formed a partnership with Mumbrue & Hunt. Mr. MUMBRUE sold out in 1872, and the firm of Hunt & Woods was dissolved in 1876, Mr. WOODS continuing the business. In Weyauwega [Waupaca County, Wisconsin], he [William WOODS] married Miss Emma D. WOOD, a native of Candor, Tioga County, New York. Mr. WOODS served four years as Town Clerk. He has been Village Clerk and Trustee, and is now serving his second term as President of the village. Mr. WOODS is also Secretary of the [Waupaca] County Agricultural Society. He is a Freemason and a Democrat. In 1879 William WOODS was a candidate for the Assembly, and was defeated by S.
