WI BIO - Waupaca Co - WOODNORTH, J. H. History of Northern Wisconsin. Chicago: Western Historical, 1881, vol II, p 1088 J. H. WOODNORTH, Register of Deeds, Waupaca County, Wisconsin, was born in New York City, where his father, S. WOODNORTH, was for many years in the merchant tailoring business. The family came to the Town of Royalton [Royalton Township, Waupaca County] in 1856, and to Waupaca [Waupaca Township, Waupaca County] two years later. J. H. WOODNORTH received his schooling in the Fourteenth Street Academy, New York, and in the Waupaca High School. He learned the profession he now follows with Ole OLESON, a druggist. Our subject began the drug business in 1874, having previously been for four years in mercantile business. In 1863 he [J. H. WOODNORTH] enlisted as a private in Company G, Twenty-first Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry. He served through the Atlanta campaign. In September 1864 he was promoted to First Lieutenant, and made Chief Clerk in the Inspector General's Office. He was attached to the staff of George H. THOMAS. In this capacity he fought at Franklin and Nashville, and returned with his regiment in August 1865. Mr. [J. H.] WOODNORTH has served as City Superintendent of Schools, Deputy Sheriff, and City Marshal. In the fall of 1879 he was elected Register of Deeds as an Independent over a Republican opponent. Mr. WOODNORTH is now attending wholly to his drug store, the duties of the Register's office being most efficiently performed by his old and tried deputy, Winfield SCOTT. Mr. WOODNORTH is now District Deputy Grand Master of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, and has been a leading spirit, having held all the offices in Waupaca Lodge No. 208, I. O. O. F.
