WI BIO - Waupaca Co - WITT, Charles G. History of Northern Wisconsin. Chicago: Western Historical, 1881, vol II, pp 1109-1110 Charles G. WITT, farmer, Section 31 [Bear Creek Township, Waupaca County, Wisconsin, P. O. Union [Union Township, Waupaca County], was born in 1833 in New Hampshire. In 1845 he came to Wisconsin with his father and settled in Sheboygan County, helping his father to clear a farm. In 1857 he [Charles G. WITT] came to Royalton [Royalton Township, Waupaca County], and after numerous attempts at hiring out at anything he could do, finally secured a chance to teach the Royalton school, at $35 a month, and for which he secured $20 in cash, the balance in tax certificates. In 1859 he secured 160 acres of swamp land from the State (a part of his [p 1110] present farm) and commenced his future home. [An 1878 map of Waupaca County shows a cranberry marsh on Sections 27, 28, 33, and 34, east of where Mr. WITT's farm would have been on Section 31.] He now owns 360 acres in one body, of which 160 acres are improved. He owns a total of about 700 acres of land. Mr. WITT is one of the substantial farmers of the county and owns the best farm in Bear Creek [Bear Creek Township, Waupaca County]. His buildings are numerous and of the best character. He was a member of the Forty-ninth Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry, and served until the close of the war. He commenced with nothing but his hands and plenty of pluck. Charles G. WITT is living with his third wife; he has one son. Submitted by Cathy Kubly
