WI BIO - Waupaca Co - ROSS, G. W. History of Northern Wisconsin. Chicago: Western Historical, 1881, vol II, pp 1104-1105 G. W. ROSS, farmer, Sections 7 and 8, was born 05 March 1810 in Rodman, Jefferson County, New York, and has been a lifelong farmer. In 1851 he came to Waupaca [Waupaca County], Wisconsin, and began working for E. C. SESSIONS at logging, etc. Returning East, Mr. ROSS, although penniless, met a friend, who knowing his desire to locate in Wisconsin, kindly loaned him $50. Thus in the fall of 1852 we find Mr. ROSS again on Session's Prairie [northwest of Waupaca, formerly the GIBBONS farm, in Waupaca County, Wisconsin], where he bought eighty acres of Government land. By working as a carpenter and at any honorable labor he could turn his hand to, Mr. ROSS paid for this, and added another eighty acres. His [G. W. ROSS'] wife was [p 1105] formerly Miss Fanny M. DEWEY, of Rutland [Rutland County], Vermont. They [G. W. and Fanny M. (DEWEY) ROSS] have three children: (1) John J. [born in 1840, married Emma ----, who was born in 1851, both dying in 1929, and buried at Lakeside Memorial Park, Section 30, Waupaca Township, Waupaca County, Wisconsin]; (2) George D.; and (3) Amasa W., who were all born in New York State. The house which sheltered him in the early days is now in use as a barn, and he has a pleasant and roomy home in which to spend his later years. A fine 40x56 barn was burned by a lightning stroke in August 1870. [There is a Dewey Cemetery on Section 8 of Waupaca Township, Waupaca County, Wisconsin. John J. (1840-1929) & Emma (1851-1929) ROSS are buried at Lakeside Memorial Park, on Section 30, Waupaca Township.] Submitted by Cathy Kubly
