WI BIO - Waupaca Co - RITZ, C. H. History of Northern Wisconsin. Chicago: Western Historical, 1881, vol II, p 1103 C. H. RITZ, miller, Lind [Lind Township, Waupaca County, Wisconsin, was born in 1831 near Metz, in France. He learned the milling business, and in 1856 came to Waupaca County, ran the Lord Mills one year, and for two years ran the Scandinavian Mills. In January 1863 he visited France, came home in September, and was drafted; he procured a substitute, and escaped without a scratch. In 1865 C. H. RITZ was married, and he has four children. Mr. [C. H.] RITZ, with John ENDLING, built the first store in Amherst [in Portage County, adjacent to and west of Waupaca County]. From 1859-1866 he was proprietor of the City Mills, now the Woolen Mills. He disposed of that property and bought the stave factory at Waupaca [in Waupaca Township, north of and adjacent to Lind Township], which he still owns. In 1876 he moved to Suffolk [Nancemond County], Virginia, and bought a mill, but finding it not healthy there, he traded it for the old saw mill and water power at his present place. In 1877 he built the St. Paul's Mills, in Lind, Waupaca County, Wisconsin, having four run of stone, smutter, separator, and purifier, and has a saw mill in connection with the same. He [C. H. RITZ] ran a mill in Detroit [Wayne County], Michigan, for some time. Submitted by Cathy Kubly
