Brattleboro: Transcript Publishing Company, 1894, pp 212-213 (portrait p 212) Frank George HOWLAND, of Barre [Washington County, Vermont], was born 27 August 1863 in Boston [Suffolk County], Massachusetts, son of George and Angelina (BUSZELL) HOWLAND. His father's employment was that of farmer and auctioneer, and he has been a resident of East Montpelier [Washington County, Vermont] since April 1866. He has been the incumbent of several important town offices and was sent to the Legislature in 1882. Frank G. HOWLAND pursued the usual course of instruction in the public schools and then graduated from the Vermont Methodist Episcopal Seminary at Montpelier, in the class of 1884. Republican; represented the town of Barre in the Legislature of 1892, and served creditably as a member of the committee on banks. Was elected teller of the National Bank of Barre on 16 February 1885, and two year later was promoted to cashier; he was largely instrumental in securing the charter for the Barre Savings Bank and Trust Company, which commenced business 27 February 1893, and of which institution he is treasurer. He is considered in the community in which he resides as an active, energetic, and efficient man of business; shrewd, intelligent, and honorable in all his transactions. On 29 March 1888 he [Frank G. Educated in the public schools of East Montpelier, and Montpelier Seminary 1884. Was teller at the National Bank of Barre 1885; cashier January 1887; president 1907 and since. Was incorporator of Barre Savings Bank and Trust Company, 1893, and treasurer since its organization; incorporator Barre and Montpelier Traction and Power Company, and served as its treasurer several years; incorporator People's Lighting, Heating and Power Company, and was its treasurer several years; trustee French's Barre Library; incorporator and president of the Granite Mutual Insurance Company; trustee of Barre City Hospital, and one of the founders. In whatever assembly he is found, Mr. HOWLAND represents the solid sense of the meeting. Republican; represented Barre in the Vermont Legislature 1892; has been chairman of the Republican city committee for the past ten years; justice of the peace for the past twenty years; was senator from Washington County 1906, served as chairman of committee on banks. Has been a member board of civil authority for more than twenty years, its chairman most of the time. Episcopalian; is vestryman and warden of the Church of the Good Shepherd, Barre; was lay deputy to general convention at Richmond, Virginia, in 1907.
