"....As the dreadful wailing slowly subsided, I was struck by a macabre feeling of irony: my desire for aloneness versus the forced solitude of our situation. It is truly frightening to feel alone when you are surrounded by humanity. Not a word was uttered when the last of the pitiable cries ceased.....that cloak of silence draped over my shoulders, and to this day I have been unable to shed its ponderous hold".

"Shipbuilding is such a perfect art nowadays.... |
.....that absolute disaster, involving the passengers, is inconceivable.... there will be time enough before the vessel sinks to save the life of every person on board....... When anyone asks me how I can best describe my experience of nearly forty years at sea I merely say uneventful. In all my experiences I have never been in an accident worth speaking of."
Captain Edward J. Smith, in 1907

| "The most dreadful sound of all..... | ![]() |
.....is the sound of people drowning, the screams, absolutely ghastly....(and) the silence that followed it. It's as if the whole world stood still that night once the ship and sounds had gone. I still have a vivid recollection of being absolutely petrified on that dark night with a sinking ship and people screaming. It was dreadful, dreadful."
Eva Hart, 2nd Class Passenger

PLAYWRIGHT'S INTRODUCTION
TO
TITANIC AFTERMATH
On April 14th, 1912 the lives of 2200 families were forever changed along with the attitude of the modern world. The sinking of the Titanic was a seminal event in the early 20th century that shaped the way we looked at technology and mankind's abilities to "conquer nature." The tragedy also typified the immense gap between the classes in the so called "Gilded" age. Furthermore, the disaster showed how corporate greed and careless risk-taking, as in many tragedies of this kind, was at the heart of the problem. Titanic Aftermath focuses on these issues through the eyes of the tragedy's survivors and its key players.
Based on the Senate Hearing transcripts and survivor accounts, the play is told by J. Bruce Ismay, then president of the White Star Line, and three composite characters: an Officer of the Titanic, a First Class Woman Passenger, and a Third Class Woman Passenger. Through their perceptions and commentary, we travel to the heat of the Senate Hearings, listen to survivor accounts, and experience how the disaster forever altered the lives of those involved. We also follow the scapegoat villain, Bruce Ismay, on a journey towards absolution from his immense feelings of guilt and shame. An ensemble cast plays many different roles all based on actual testimonials and documentation.
Titanic Aftermath promises to be a fascinating exploration into the real reasons why the Titanic disaster happened, the emotional toll it took on its survivors, and how the lessons supposedly learned are still problems today.

"The partially filled lifeboats standing by only a few hundred yards away never came back....How could any human being fail to heed those cries?"
Jack Thayer Jr., 1st Class Passenger
Survivor

"They screamed and they yelled for help. And of course nobody came to help.....that was a terrible time. I can still hear them."
Ruth Becker, 2nd Class Passenger
Survivor

"Had there been enough lifeboats in two and half hours in a very smooth sea, no one would have died."
Eva Hart, 2nd Class Passenger
Survivor

" Few precautions....... Not enough lifeboats....... It was almost like......
murder
wasn't it?"
Frank Prentice, Ship Storekeeper
