STECKELBERG, Henry Commemorative and Biographical Record of Columbia, Sauk and Adams Counties, WI. Chicago: Ogle, 1901, p 740-741 Henry STECKELBERG, a progressive farmer of Sauk County [WI] whose residence of more than usual comforts is located on section 27 in Westfield Township, has spent the greater part of his life in that region. He has aided in transforming the wilderness which first met his eye into a pleasant and beautiful farming country. Our subject was born in Kirchweihe, Hanover, Germany, 14 Nov 1850, and was a son of Jahn G. and Mary (LICHTE) STECKELBERG, who were natives of the same locality. His mother died in her native land at age 46. The father was a farm laborer in Germany, and came to the U. S. in 1868, and settled in Sauk County, WI, where he died in Westfield Township in 1887 at age 66. At the age of 18 our subject came to Sauk County, WI, since which time he has lived in Westfield Township. He attended school two winters in Lodi [Columbia County, WI], and soon acquired a knowledge of American ways and customs and the English language. He purchased his present farm about seven years after coming to the county, and at the time there were but four or five acres of the land cleared for cultivation. He is now the possessor of 240 acres of land, and has about 160 acres cleared for cultivation. He erected a commodious and substantial brick house in 1884, and in 1896 built one of the largest barns in the county. It measures 40x104 feet and has a basement under the entire structure. He makes stock raising and dairying the features of the place, and does not engage extensively in grain raising. Mr. STECKELBERG was married 24 Jan 1874 to Catharine MEYER, daughter of George and Catharine (FREESE) MEYER. Mrs. STECKELBERG was born in Repdorf, Hanover, Germany, and came to the U. S. in company with her parents in 1872. [p 741] The family settled in Westfield Township [Sauk County, WI], where the parents still reside. Six children, two of whom died in infancy, have been born to Mr. and Mrs. STECKELBERG, the four surviving children named as follows: Henry, Ida (now Mrs. Herman LICHT, of Westfield Township), Emma and Rosella. The family are connected with the Lutheran Zion church, of Westfield [Marquette County, WI], and Mr. STECKELBERG is an elder of the society. He is a man of great force of character and under his charge many of the substantial new bridges have been built and other improvements made in the highways of the township. He has served as chairman of the township board since 1891, and his efficient service is appreciated by the citizens of his community. Politically he is a Democrat, and stands firmly for the principles of his party. Contributed by Cathy Kubly
