“The History of Jefferson County, Wisconsin”, published: Chicago: Western Historical Company. 1879. CHARLES SPENCE, farmer, Sec. 10; P.O. Concord; born in London, England, Feb. 14, 1840; came to America with his parents in 1848, locating in Concord, Jefferson Co., Wis.; here he has since lived with the exception of six or seven years spent in the mines of Colorado, Utah, Montana and Idaho. He returned in 1870, and located on the old homestead of 335 acres; this was the farm of his father, Richard Spence, who died May 19, 1875, leaving eight children – William, Mary A., Richard, Elizabeth, George, John, Charles and Edward. The subject of this sketch married Miss Mary E. Spaulding March 5, 1875; they have three children – Lillie, Samuel and Myrtle.
