Fort Atkinson; was born on the Rhine, in Prussia, Oct. 30, 1827; he received a good common-school education, and at the age of 16, was employed in a coal mine, where he remained four years. He emigrated to New Jersey in 1848, and learned the trade of carpenter, and, in 1852, went to Bridgeport, Conn., where he was employed on the Housatonic Railroad, at bridge-building. Married in Bridgeport in 1856, Louisa Hartel, born in Prussia in 1839; had five children, four living - George, Phillip, Henry and Louisa. In 1867, he came to Wisconsin and bought a farm of 120 acres in Oakland Township, which he worked until 1872, when he came to live on and manage Mr. Klamant's farm in Sumner township.
