PITKIN, of Fair Haven [Rutland County, Vermont], was born 06 September 1826 in Poultney [Rutland County, Vermont], son of Joseph and Lucinda (SMITH) PITKIN. He received his education in the public schools of Poultney, and at the age of twenty-one removed to Fair Haven, where he has since resided, with the exception of three years (from 1852 to 1855), which he spent in California. In 1855 he engaged in the grocery and provision business in which he continued for ten years, when he and his brother, W. W. PITKIN, formed a partnership, under the firm name of Pitkin & Brother, to do a general hardware trade, in which enterprise they have been successful to the present time. Republican; has held nearly all of the town offices, and has always filled them with credit to himself and honor to the town; in 1872 and 1886 represented Fair Haven in the state Legislature; and in 1892 was elected to the state Senate from Rutland County. Member of Eureka Lodge No. 75, Free & Accepted Masons of Fair Haven, and has been master of the lodge six years; has served as D. D. G. M. of the Fourth Masonic district three years; is also a member of Poultney Chapter No. 10; Morning Star Council No. 10, of Poultney; and of Killington Commandery No. 6, Rutland. On 31 December 1855 in Fair Haven [Rutland County, Vermont] Mr. [John G.] PITKIN married Miss Susan J., daughter of Samuel and Marinda (BROWN) HOWARD. One child is issue: a daughter, Harriet M.
