Rutland PEMBER, Emmett R. Men of Vermont: Illustrated Biographical History of Vermonters & Sons of Vermont. Ullery. Brattleboro: Transcript Publishing Company, 1894, p 306 Emmett R. PEMBER, of Wells [Vermont], was born 21 September 1846 in Wells [Rutland County, Vermont], son of Russell and Emily (BIDWELL) PEMBER. He enjoyed such educational advantages as were afforded by the public schools of Wells, supplemented by a course of study at the Troy Conference Academy at Poultney [Rutland County, Vermont], and the Fort Edward Institute of Fort Edward [Washington County], New York. His ambition tempted him to follow a professional life, but filial duty induced him to remain with his parents on the homestead, and here he has devoted the larger part of a useful life to farming. Mr. PEMBER is an ardent Republican, and has continuously been in incumbent of some town office since he was twenty-one years of age; served sixteen years as chairman of the Republican town committee; several years on the Republican county committee; senator from Rutland County in 1880, serving on the committees on agriculture and highways and bridges; the youngest member of the Senate during that term, but notwithstanding his youth established a high reputation as a careful, considerate and intelligent legislator. For two terms he has served acceptably on the State Board of Agriculture. He is a Free Mason, connected with Morning Star Lodge No. 37, of Poultney. He has always been actively identified with educational work both in our common schools and Sunday schools, and several years of his earlier life were spent in teaching. Whatever tends to promote the moral, religious, or material interests of the community in which he lives, or the state at large, ever finds in him a faithful and zealous advocate. On 03 October 1872 at Caroline [Tomkins County], New York, Mr. [Emmett R.] PEMBER married Carrie, daughter of William and Julia A. (BARTON) WINCHELL. This union has been blessed with five daughters and one son: Grace E., Celesta M., Julia E., Ernest W., Ruth A., and Rubie Alice. Submitted by Cathy Kubly
