Brattleboro: Transcript Publishing Company, 1894, p 96 Gamaliel Leonard JONES, of Audubon [Becker County], Minnesota, was born 11 April 1843 in Hubbardton [Rutland County, Vermont], son of Norman and Elizabeth (Gibbs) Jones. Educated in the common schools, Castleton Seminary, and Middlebury College, graduating from college in 1868 at the age of twenty-five. Since that time he has almost constantly been occupied in teaching, passing many years in the vicinity of Dayton [Montgomery County], Ohio, and becoming principal of Winchester Union School [Adams County] (Ohio) in 1873. Upon the death of his father in 1874 he went to Lake Eunice [Becker County], Minnesota, purchasing a large tract of land, which he carried on while attending to his great work as a teacher in the vicinity; for four years was principal of Lake Park graded school; was afterwards principal of the Audubon graded school, at the same time doing much work of a public nature as town clerk and justice of the peace, county superintendent of schools, member of a committee for selecting textbooks for the schools of his county, and as president of the temperance association, and secretary of his church for the Northern Minnesota district. Social and political organizations have also taken his attention to some extent and his work for the Grange in its early days was prominent. In 1882 he was made an honorary member of Lake Park Literary Society, and has contributed many articles to the press, and often by request has delivered public addresses of a political, religious, educational or scientific nature. It has ever been the aim of his life to aid in giving liberty and relief to the oppressed, establishing equal rights and impartial justice for all; promoting every measure which tends to the prosperity of his country as a whole, and elevating the masses, morally and intellectually. On 19 August 1868 in Weston [Windsor County, Vermont] Mr. [Gamaliel Leonard] JONES was married to [Miss] Althea Maria PIKE [born in Massachusetts], daughter of Josiah Wooster and Nancy Maria (HARMON) PIKE; they have five children: Joseph Charles, Mary Caroline, Edward Harrison (deceased), Earl Grant, and Lulu Althea Julia.
