Rutland JOHNSON, Leonard Men of Vermont: Illustrated Biographical History of Vermonters & Sons of Vermont. Ullery. Brattleboro: Transcript Publishing Company, 1894, pp 223-224 Leonard JOHNSON, of Pawlet, was born 28 November 1828 at Pawlet [Rutland County, Vermont], son of James and Ruth (WILLIAMS) JOHNSON. Having received the usual educational advantages of the common schools, he was a tiller of the soil until he arrived at his majority, when his active disposition making him desire a change, he entered the employment of the R. & W. [Rutland & Whithall?] Railroad Company as station agent, and has continued in this occupation for forty years. During the late Civil War he acted as recruiting officer and assistant provost marshal. In 1852 he became a member of the order of Odd Fellows, joining Hopkins Lodge, Hartford, New York, and he has been a Free & Accepted Mason for thirty-five years. On 26 February 1857 at Pawlet [Rutland County, Vermont] Mr. Leonard JOHNSON was married to Harriet, daughter of Harry and Harriet VIETS. Of this union were born three children: Wayland, R. G. M., and Anna A. As his second wife Leonard JOHNSON wedded Ellen, daughter of Charles and Julia WRIGHT, of Hartford [Washington County], New York. Submitted by Cathy Kubly
