Rutland HOWE, Luther Proctor Men of Vermont: Illustrated Biographical History of Vermonters & Sons of Vermont. Ullery. Brattleboro: Transcript Publishing Company, 1894, p 211 (portrait p 211) Luther Proctor HOWE, of Danby [Rutland County, Vermont], was born 06 January 1821 in Ludlow [Windsor County, Vermont], son of Joseph and Olive (SCOTT) HOWE. Descended from a well-known ancestry, he obtained, despite difficulties which he managed to surmount, a practical education in the schools of Clarendon and Troy Conference Academy of Poultney [both in Rutland County]. Subsequently he taught school and while teaching studied and improved his opportunities. For some time he was engaged in farming in Clarendon and Wallingford [Rutland County], but moved to Mt. Tabor [Rutland County] in 1854. He has served with credit in various official capacities, first as an old-time Whig and later as a loyal Republican. His residence in the town has seen him lister, town clerk, constable, collector, selectman, and deputy sheriff. He has done good service as town representative in four different sessions, 1856, 1861, 1862, 1864, acting on important committees and finally was deemed worthy of a seat in the state Senate in 1874, where he was a member of the agricultural and general committees. He is allied both to the order of Free Masons and Odd Fellows. On 23 October 1845 at Clarendon [Rutland County, Vermont] he [Luther Proctor HOWE] married Mary Ann, daughter of Ozial H. and Avice (HARRINGTON) ROUND. To them were born: Addie (Mrs. Joel C. BAKER), and Charles Luther [HOWE]. On 02 November 1865 he [Luther Proctor HOWE] formed a second alliance with Helen Maria, daughter of Judge Austin and Betsey M. BAKER.
