HOULIHAN, clergyman, Fair Haven [Rutland County, Vermont], was born [no date is given] at Cahirciveen, County of Kerry, Ireland; son of James and Hanora (HEALY) HOULIHAN. He came to this country when a child with his parents and settled in Westerly [Washington County], Rhode Island. Educated in the public schools of that place; took classical course at St. Charles College, Ellicott City [Howard County], Maryland, and entered Grand Seminary, Montreal, Province of Quebec; ordained to priesthood 23 December 1883. His first work in the priesthood was as assistant at St. Mary's Church, Brandon [Rutland County, Vermont], remaining there until 28 December 1885, when he was appointed the first resident priest of Ludlow, attended from Ludlow, Springfield, Proctorsville [all in Windsor County, Vermont] and Mt. Holly [Rutland County, Vermont]; bought the property adjoining the Catholic Church there and built the parochial residence; September 1899 was transferred to Poultney [Rutland County, Vermont]; built in 1901 the beautiful gothic church near the parochial residence on Main Street; 23 October 1907 appointed pastor of St. Mary's Church, Fair Haven; has made many improvements on the church property, notably in the church, new pews, hard wood floor, marble altar rail, marble pulpit and new side altars, and decorated the interior of the church.
