Educated in the public schools, and at Phillips Academy, Andover [Essex County], Massachusetts. Entered the actuarial department of the National Life Insurance Company in 1897; appointed secretary to the president of the company in 1902; elected superintendent of agencies in 1911. Republican; secretary of Montpelier board of school commissioners; secretary Vermont Historical Society. In religious belief a Congregationalist. Past master Aurora Lodge No. 22, Free & Accepted Masons; member King Solomon Chapter No. 22, Royal Arch Masons; Montpelier Council No. 4, Royal & Select Masons; Mt. Zion Commandery No. 9, Knights Templar; Mt. Sinai Temple, Order of the Mystic Shrine; Montpelier Country Club; and Apollo Club. FIELD, broker, real estate and insurance, Rutland [Rutland County, Vermont], was born 07 June 1850 at Brandon [Rutland County, Vermont], son of William M. and Minerva K. (DAVENPORT) FIELD. Educated at Brandon and Rutland public schools, and at the Burr and Burton Seminary, Manchester [Bennington County, Vermont]. Republican; member of Republican town and city committee, and chairman for several years; member and chairman of Republican county committee several years; member of Republican committee of the first congressional district, and delegate to many state, district, and county conventions. Was assistant postmaster 1872 to 1888; postmaster 1888 to 1892; has been post office inspector; trustee of the village of Rutland; school commissioner; city treasurer; United States marshal; trustee of Rutland Savings Bank; director of People's Gas Light Company; trustee and treasurer of Evergreen Cemetery; treasurer of State Mutual Fire Insurance Company; and secretary of Rutland Improvement League. Congregationalist; member of prudential committee, and secretary and treasurer of Sunday school for twenty years. Member of Center Lodge No. 34, Free & Accepted Masons, of Rutland; American Legion of Honor; grand chancellor and supreme representative, Knights of Pythias; exalted ruler Rutland Lodge No. 345, Benevolent Protective Order of Elks; and delegate to Grand Lodge.
