Rutland BURDETT, Jesse Men of Vermont: Illustrated Biographical History of Vermonters & Sons of Vermont. Ullery. Brattleboro: Transcript Publishing Company, 1894, p 51 Jesse BURDETT, of Rutland [Rutland County, Vermont], was born 19 January 1826 in Brookline [Windham County, Vermont], son of Jacob and Rebecca (TALBOT) BURDETT. When quite young his family removed to Newfane [Windham County]; educated Newfane public schools; apprenticed to learn the trade of blacksmith; followed this employment eleven years. After a short interval, during which he worked at his vocation in Brattleboro [Windham County], he removed to Arlington [Bennington County], where he has since resided; appointed station agent there. In 1852 he became conductor on passenger train from Rutland [Rutland County] to Troy [Orleans County] on Western Vermont Railroad, now the Bennington & Rutland; in 1860 employed in similar position on Hudson River railroad, between Albany [Orleans County] and New York; afterwards acted as trainmaster in same corporation; in 1871 appointed superintendent of Rutland division of Central Vermont Railroad, a position he now holds; his headquarters at Rutland. On 21 October 1851 Mr. [Jess] BURDETT married Cornelia C., daughter of John C. and Amanda (HILL) LATHROP, by whom he has one son, John L. Mr. BURDETT is a member of St. James Episcopal Church in Arlington [Orleans County, Vermont], of which he has been a vestryman for more than twenty years. Democrat; has held many minor offices in Arlington; represented that town in the Legislature in 1857; of late years has been obliged by his professional duties to be so frequently away from his home, that he has not been eligible for the discharge of the responsibilities of public trust.
