WILTROUT was born in 1840 in Somerset County, Pennsylvania, where he lived until 1847, when his parents moved to Clinton County, Indiana. His mother died there the next spring [1848], at which place he remained until 1854, when the family emigrated again, to Richland County, Wisconsin, and were among the first settlers in the Town of Bloom. His father lives in Green County, Iowa, and Adam now resides in the Town of Forest [Richland County, Wisconsin, just west of Bloom Township, in the northwest corner of the county], and owns 40 acres of land on Section 16. He [Adam A. WILTROUT] was married 04 July 1871 to Mercy E. CLARK [a maiden name?], of Allamakee County, Iowa, by Ira B. BRUNSON, of Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin. They [Adam A. and Mercy E. WILTROUT] have five children: Rosa R., James G., Charles W., Bertha B., and Iola R. From 1871-1875 he was a resident of Allamakee County, Iowa. He removed to Victory, Vernon County, Wisconsin, in 1875. From Victory he removed to [p 1049] Richland County, Wisconsin. Mr. WILTROUT is officer of the day in Jerry Turner Post, No. 85, department of Wisconsin. Adam A. WILTROUT enlisted in 1861 [on 02 November 1861 at Madison, Dane County, Wisconsin] in the 14th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry, Company K, and was promoted to Corporal on 01 July 1865. [He participated in the battle of Shiloh (07 April 1862), Iuka (19 September 1862), Corinth (03 October 1862), siege of Vicksburg (1863), Big Shanty (10 June 1864), Baker's Ridge, to the left of Kenesaw mountain (17 June 1864), near Atlanta (22 July 1864), Ezra Church (28 July 1864), Jonesboro (30 August 1864), Lovejoy station (02 September 1864), siege of Savannah (December 1864), Sherman's march through the Carolinas, battle at Fort Pocataligo, Salkehatchie swamp, Orangeburg, Columbia, Cheraw, the battle at Mill Creek Bend, and other skirmishes.
