WI BIO - Richland Co - RUMMERY, Thomas J. History of Crawford & Richland Counties, Wisconsin. Springfield: Union, 1884, Part 2, p 1039 Thomas J. RUMMERY, for the last nine years treasurer of the town of Eagle [Richland County, Wisconsin], was born in 1835 in Sussex County, England. When he was six years old [1841 or 1842?] his parents came to America, settling in Cuyahoga County, Ohio. His father purchased a farm in the town of Royalton [County, Ohio], and there the subject of this sketch passed his younger days, obtaining his education in the public schools. In 1863 he [Thomas J. RUMMERY] came to Richland County [Wisconsin] and engaged in teaching, soon purchasing timber land on Section 16, town of Eagle. He has since cleared a farm of about 70 acres [shown on the 1874 plat map as 80 acres], and erected a neat frame house and barn. His place is pleasantly located in the neighborhood known as Basswood. [As shown on the 1895 plat map of Eagle Township, Richland County, Wisconsin, in 1895 T. J. RUMMERY owned (in addition to the 80 acres on Section 16) 240 acres on Section 15, with 80 acres adjoining on Section 14 (all this land formerly made up of two 40-tracts on Section 15 and two 40-acre tracts on Section 14 belonging in 1874 to J. D. HOTMAN and 120 of the 160 acres on Section 15 belonging in 1874 to A. WEBSTER.] He [Thomas J. RUMMERY] was first married [Miss?] Rosaline JOHNSON, who was born in Huron County, Ohio, and died in 1873, leaving one child, who died three months after the death of its mother. In 1878 he [Thomas J. RUMMERY] was again married, to [Miss] Mary MATHEWS, daughter of Hubert and Mary MATHEWS, who was born in the town of Eagle [Richland County, Wisconsin] where her parents [Hubert and Mary] were early settlers.
