Brattleboro: Transcript Publishing Company, 1894, p 343 George Barker ROWELL, of Barton Landing [Orleans County, Vermont; the name of "Barton Landing" was changed to "Orleans" in 1909], was born 30 March 1846 in North Troy [Orleans County, Vermont], son of Adoniram Judson and Lucy A. (RICHARDSON) ROWELL. After the usual course of instruction in the common schools, he pursued his educational training in the Mississippi Valley and St. Johnsbury Academies, and subsequently graduated from the Burlington Medical College in June 1872, as a practitioner of the homeopathic school. For some time he was employed as a teacher in the Richford [Franklin County, Vermont] graded and public schools, but soon after his graduation commenced the practice of his profession in his native town [Barton Landing]. He removed to Irasburg [Orleans County, Vermont] in 1873, where he continued in the same occupation until 1891, when he came to Barton's Landing. Here he became a general dealer in horses, cattle, wagons and other articles. In connection with a partner [not named] he purchased a large farm at Irasburg. During the [Civil] war Mr. [George Barker] ROWELL served as a clerk in the quartermaster's department under Captain DUNTON, at City Point [Prince George County], Virginia, in 1864. For four years he discharged the duties of town superintendent of Irasburg [Orleans County, Vermont]. In his political creed he inclines to the principles of the Republican party, and is a Congregationalist with respect to his religious preferences. He is a master Mason in good standing and unites with Missisquoi Lodge No. 9, at Richford. On 01 January 1873 he [George Barker ROWELL] married Isadore, daughter of Daniel and Susan (PERKINS) DARLING, of Masonville, Province of Quebec [probably then still called "Canada East"]; she [Isadore ROWELL] died 20 August 1876. Mr. [George Barker] ROWELL contracted a second alliance 01 September 1891 with Etta, daughter of Hugh and Jennie (ROWAN) GRANT, of Pembroke, Ontario, the fruit of which union [of George Barker and Etta ROWELLL] is one son, Hugh Grant.
