Orleans MILES, Lorenzo Dow Men of Vermont: Illustrated Biographical History of Vermonters & Sons of Vermont. Ullery. Brattleboro: Transcript Publishing Company, 1894, pp 274-275 (portrait p 274) Lorenzo Dow MILES, of Newport [Orleans County, Vermont] was born 26 September 1838 in the town of St. Johnsbury [Caledonia County, Vermont], son of Orrin and Frances (CLARK) MILES. He received his preparatory education in the schools and academy of Johnson [Lamoille County, Vermont], and was contemplating a college course, but was unable to on account of the bursting of the war cloud in 1861. He enlisted in Company E, Third Vermont Regiment, while yet a schoolboy; was on detached on special service with Battery F, Fifth U. S. Regulars, with which he remained until early winter 1863, when he returned to his regiment, with which he served until honorably discharged at Burlington [Chittenden County, Vermont], 27 July 1864; participated in all the battles in which the Sixth Army Corps were engaged, except the seven days' fight in front of the rebel capital, including Lees Mills, Antietam, both engagements of Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Wilderness, Petersburg, Welden Station, Cold Harbor, and Fort Stevens. In all these he escaped unscathed, nor was he ever captured, but did his duty every day during three years of service, except for a three-month period he spent in the hospital with typhoid fever. At the expiration of the war Mr. MILES came to Albany [Orleans County, Vermont], where he settled down as a farmer. In 1874 he was appointed deputy sheriff and successively re-elected until he was made sheriff ten years later. Since the fall of 1878 he has resided in Craftsbury, Barton, Irasburg, and Newport [all in Orleans County, Vermont], but finally made his residence in Albany. He has been concerned in the arrest of many prominent criminals and was actively employed in search of the murderer ALMY. Republican since the formation of the party [1854]. Member of Baxter Post, Grand Army of the Republic; Knights of Pythias; and in the Masonic Order is a member of the Knights Templar. He is liberal in his religious preferences.
