Burlington: Ullery Publishing Company, 1912, p 220 David Wesley HILDRETH, Newport [Orleans County, Vermont], editor and publisher, was born 24 January 1853 at Hallowell [Kennebec County], Maine, son of Levi and Abby (BASFORD) HILDRETH. Educated in the public schools. Came to Vermont at the age of nineteen years; station agent Thetford [Orange County] 1872-1874; spare and telegraph operator Barton Landing [Orleans County] 1874-1879 [name "Barton Landing" changed to "Orleans" in 1909]; began drug business 1879, and built business block in town [Newport]; purchased the the "Express and Standard" at Newport 1897, and has since conducted that paper in connection with jobbing plant and wholesale and retail store. Possibly more widely known as a writer of dramas, short sketches, and stories under the nom-de-plume of "David HILL." Republican.
