Brattleboro: Transcript Publishing Company, 1894, pp 177-178 Merrill Thomas HAMILTON, of Newport [Orleans County, Vermont], was born 07 April 1849 in Berkshire, Franklin County [Vermont], son of Hannibal and Julia E. (THOMPSON) HAMILTON. Obtaining his education in the public schools of Berkshire, Richford Academy and the Northampton Institute at Fairfax [Franklin County], in 1869 he entered the dental office of Gilman & Sheerar at St. Albans [Franklin County], where for three years he studied dentistry. In 1871 he removed to Newport where he has been established ever since. Dr. HAMILTON is unusually proficient in his profession in which he takes the highest rank and has enjoyed a very extensive practice, not only in the state, but also in Canada. In 1884 he became interested in the manufacture of brick in Derby ["Derby" is in Essex County; "Derby Center" and "Derby Line" are in Orleans County] and also in Barton Landing [Orleans County, Vermont; name changed from "Barton Landing" to "Orleans" 1909], but three years subsequently sold out his interest in the business. Dr. HAMILTON is an expert horseman and takes much interest in equine matters; possesses two large farms in North Troy [Orleans County, Vermont], making a specialty of dairy products. Democrat; has never taken any active part in public affairs, but conscientiously devoted his whole time to his profession. For many years has been a treasurer of St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Newport. Has taken the degrees of Ancient Craft Masonry in Memphremagog Lodge of that place. On 22 August 1873 he [Merrill Thomas HAMILTON] was united in marriage to [first wife] Clara F., daughter of Warren and Emily (ROWELL) FULLER of Newport [Orleans County, Vermont], whom he had the misfortune to lose after three years of wedded life. One son was born to them, Harry Fuller. On 24 May 1878 Dr. [Merrill Thomas] HAMILTON married [second wife] Etta I., daughter of Eleazer and Mary A. (CULVER) PORTER of Troy [Orleans County, Vermont]. Of this marriage there have been issue: Lavina Fuller [HAMILTON], and Samuel Worcester Fuller [HAMILTON]. Submitted by Cathy Kubly
