Orleans COWLES, Asahel Read Men of Vermont: Illustrated Biographical History of Vermonters & Sons of Vermont. Ullery. Brattleboro: Transcript Publishing Company, 1894, pp 81-82 (portrait p 82) Asahel Read COWLES, of Newport [Orleans County, Vermont], was born 26 May 1845 in Craftsbury [Orleans County, Vermont], son of Leonard and Emeline (GRAY) COWLES. Having removed to Coventry [Orleans County, Vermont] in 1851, he received his education in the public schools, the Brownington Academy, and the high school at Coventry. He studied vocal music with James and Albert WHITNEY of Boston. For twenty years of his life he has devoted himself to teaching vocal music, four years in New York. He is extensively engaged in the sale of musical instruments and sewing machines. He has stores for the sale of these articles in Newport [Orleans County] and Morrisville [Lamoille County]. He is a member of the Republican party, a Master Mason and member of Memphremagog Lodge No. 64, Newport; belongs to the Methodist Episcopal church in Newport, and is now leader of the choir. On 30 December 1871 he [Asahel Read COWLES] married Hattie E., daughter of William P. and Lydia (ANDRUS) TITUS, of Craftsbury, and by her had two sons: Harry E., and Percy W. Submitted by Cathy Kubly
