Burlington, Ullery, 1912, p 108 Charles Azro BANCROFT, Newport [Orleans County, Vermont], special deputy collector of customs, was born 29 December 1848 at Montpelier [Washington County, Vermont], son of Azro N. and Harriet B. (WHEELER) BANCROFT. Educated in the public schools and Northfield Academy. Was clerk in Dr. George NICHOLS's drug store at Northfield [Washington County, Vermont], 1861-1862; with Orcutt & Page, grocers, 1862-1872; bookkeeper, Union Slate Company, 1872-1874; messenger, U. S. & Canada Express Company, 1875-1885; appointed deputy collector and inspector of customs under Collector SMALLEY; in service at the ports of Burlington [Chittenden County], Richford [Franklin County], and Island Pond [Essex County]; on the formation of the collection district of Memphremagog in 1897 was appointed auditor by Collector MANSUR and transferred to Newport [Orleans County]; in 1899 designated special deputy collector for that district; local secretary, Board of U. S. Civil Service Examiners. Democrat.
