Orange LATHROP, Cyrus U. Men of Vermont: Illustrated Biographical History of Vermonters & Sons of Vermont. Ullery. LATHROP, of Williamstown [Orange County, Vermont], was born 31 October 1839 in Chelsea [Orange County, Vermont], son of Urbane and Eliza (WIGGINS) LATHROP. He was the youngest of a family of six children, and his mother, left a widow when he was only three years of age, by great industry and prudence managed to keep the family together. Cyrus commenced at the common school, and by strong personal effort was enabled to continue his studies at the Chelsea and Newbury Academies [Orange County]. At the age of twenty-two he purchased a farm at Williamstown, and the cultivation of this estate has been his principal occupation ever since. He was one of the pioneers in the formation of the Williamstown Granite Company, and chairman of the board of railroad commissioners for the town of Williamstown in their bonding and contracting for their railroad, and is at present chairman of the Williamstown Construction Company. He has settled many estates and gives an active support to every wise measure for the advancement of the interests of the town. Cyrus U. LATHROP enlisted for three years in Company C, Eighth Regiment Vermont Volunteers, under the leadership of General Stephen THOMAS. He followed his regiment in every engagement after his enlistment until the war was ended, and he received an honorable discharge in June 1865. He has ever been a stalwart Republican; has held many responsible offices in town and county; for four years was associate judge of the Orange County court; in 1892 was elected to represent Williamstown in the present state legislature. Is a comrade of the Grand Army of the Republic; was a member of Waterson Post No. 45, of Chelsea, but later became a charter member and commander of William Wells Post No. 113, of Williamstown. On 24 November 1861 Judge [Cyrus U.] LATHROP was united in marriage to Frances A., daughter of Denison and Eliza (LUCE) HOPKINS, of Williamstown.
