Clarence KNIGHT, insurance, town clerk and treasurer, Newbury, was born 24 September 1861 at Newbury [Orange County, Vermont], son of Andrew J. and Sarah E. (JENNE) KNIGHT. Educated in the public schools, at Newbury Seminary, and at Eastman's Business College. Engaged in the manufacture of lumber from 1883-1897; in the flour, feed and grocery business from 1890-1900; was also a dealer in hard coal. Elected town clerk and treasurer in March 1902, and has held the office ever since. Has been clerk and treasurer of the Newbury village lighting district since it was chartered in 1905. Democrat; has been a member from Orange County, Vermont, of the Democratic state committee since 1908. Was justice of the peace from 1892-1894, and again from 1906-1908. Member of Pulaski Lodge No. 58, Free & Accepted Masons; Mt. Libanus Chapter No. 13, Royal Arch Masons; Palestine Commandery No. 5, Knights Templar; and Mt. Sinai Temple, Mystic Shrine. In 1887 M. Clarence KNIGHT married [Miss?] Clara A. SILSBY of Newbury [Orange County, Vermont]; they have four children: Horace B., William A., Harvey S., and Martha. Submitted by Cathy Kubly
